Student goes missing after ragging

Saroj Kumar Biswas, a first-year student of Ramakrishna Shilpa Vidyapith, a state-run polytechnic college, went missing on Friday night. His family members have alleged that Saroj fled from the hostel after being ragged by his seniors.

The controversy in the sexual harassment case of students of St Soldier Therapy and Rehabilitation College in Jalandhar refuses to die down, as the police have yet to register a case against the alleged accused. The college has been closed for the past one week over the issue. The girl students had alleged ragging and said the authorities turned a deaf ear to their complaints. The four girls, namely Jyoti Anup Singh Sahota, Chander Rekha, Ujala Sonia and Monika, have also given a written complaint to the police against the alleged misbehaviour of the college staff and boy students.

A first year student of physiotherapy was subjected to intense ragging by about dozen seniors in Girl’s hostel of Government Medical College (GMC) here Sunday night. GMC principal Dr Mumtaz Goni has constituted a committee to look into the matter but has denied that the girl was ragged by her seniors. Sources said the first year female student, who hailed from Bhaderwah, had come to hostel room number 135 last evening at around 4 PM and took her dinner at 8’O clock. Sources said, the seniors dragged the girl and thrashed her till 11.30 PM. The girl suffered bruises and soft tissue injuries on her body.

A first-year degree student of MG College attempted suicide after she was reportedly ragged by senior students of her college. The girl has been admitted to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. Hospital authorities said her condition was critical, but stable. The girl was allegedly repeatedly subjected to ragging by a few senior female students. Two days ago, the verbal abuse turned physical and a senior female student reportedly broke her bangles. The girl tried to hang herself in the bathroom of her home.

A student of the MS Teachers Training Centre at Ranni in Pathanamthitta was admitted to the Kozhikode Medical College due to alleged ragging. Senior students in the name of ragging on October 14, a day after he joined the institute, allegedly manhandled Vipinlal, 17, son of Pulikkumadathil Chekkoti, hailing from Payyoli in Kozhikode. It is learnt that some senior students had even forced Vipinlal to take alcohol.

The bombs were exploded by 12 persons, including outsiders, and two students from the biotechnology department at the hostel on the college campus. A medical student studying in the fourth semester at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) here was found dead hanging in his hostel room at around 3 pm today. The deceased student is from Nagaland and is identified as Bwenyhunloo Chung of Kohima. Lamphel police station have registered a case and started investigating into the matter. According to sources, it is presumed that the case might be related to a recent ragging incident at the medical institute.

Their victim is a first-year undergraduate arts student of Sangeet Bhavan. She was allegedly forced into group sex by some of her roommates and an outsider in the hostel last Sunday. By the time she was released, the girl was in a state of physical and mental trauma. "I was out of station when this happened. When I reached the hospital I found her unconscious. During her brief spells of consciousness, she was speaking in deliriums. She kept saying, "I'm not a thief, I'm not a fallen girl," said the victim's local guardian, Amita Hazra.
